Teaser:
Since arriving in Chile, Sister Valeria has always cared for the less fortunate. After September 11th ‘73, she fought to save the lives of the so-called dissidents, mostly people trying to survive. She often wonders what gives her the strength to face the abuses without fear: are courage and compassion gifts of God's grace? Those who are seeding death and injustice, shall harvest their own fall. Let them try to silence the helpless cries, fearing judgment; and fear they should, for the Almighty will hear. Tremble they shall, for when the soldiers of Christ walk among the innocents, the unrighteous will fall into their own darkness

Monsignor Enrique Alvear Urrutia and Cardinal Silva Enriquez rely on her, but sometimes it feels like they wish her to be the first one to take action.

And that's what, harshly, the Carabineros Lieutenant teaches her recruits. Teaser: Since she's been at Villa Grimaldi, the Carabineros Lieutenant Olderock has a ritual: she climbs the basement stairs, the battered bodies of the women she tortured still in her eyes, washes her hands meticulously, drains a bottle of wine and masturbates. It matters little if her fellow soldiers can hear her moans through the thin walls, those same moans that in her ears merge with the prisoners' screams. Insatiable, she is drunk for the pain on which she happily thrives on.
Relations: Colonel Moren Brito knows what he’s doing, but he’s an egomaniac, and if he thinks she’s being scared he’s in for a surprise. Teaser:
History is written by the winners, they say... But history is based on facts, and the facts, Fisher knows, are told by journalists. And journalists get paid by an editor, who in turn responds to the financial backers. The pen is not moved by the hand that holds it, but by the one that hands over the money. What will one day be written in books is what appears to the eyes of the world, and what the world wants to see is an efficient government in an orderly country.

Antonia has always been humble, meek and obedient to men and to the Lord’s commandments, taking the Holy words as an example for a simple and dignified life, both for herself and her family. She silently walks not to disturb, her eyes lowered in front of the high personalities she works for, she speaks if questioned with hushed voice. Teaser:
Cold, darkness, silence, screams, pain, tears. Only this could Buenaventura remember, holding no previous memories. Those who make question meet empty stares, for the servant can't be sad about something unknown. One can't be sad for something never felt. Like the fog that shrouds everything and blurs past and present, good and evil, hatred and love, Buenaventura moves through the rooms of Villa Grimaldi, dark and mysterious as a lost soul, with its thousand secrets and truths forever hushed. Until the time will come to let everything out.
Relations:
Ramira Luz can be frightening with a stare: she's a self assured woman, almost arrogant, especially when giving orders. Since she was a child she always knew blood: that of her father’s campesinos, working their broad property and beaten for stealing a handful of corn. She loved those red droplets dripping from the raw, flailed skin. She joined the DINA to see that blood again, to breath its scent, metallic and strong as the copper of her family’s mines. She’s a determined woman, Lieutenant Alba Piñera; she never regret her choice, uncaring of everything and everyone. Nothing, not even the threat of unknown love, will destroy her steely wall.
Relations:
She helped Miguel figuring out things in Villa Grimaldi; he's a good, hardworking guy, and they bonded. Before enrolling in the army she was studying history and followed Professor Gustavo Ruiz lessons with great interest. He had a challenging personality and was never boring. Everyone who knew her would describe Maria Eliana Soza a quiet and methodic woman. And so Adriana feels she isn’t enough: not beautiful enough, or loyal to the cause, not enough motherly, firm and efficient. She’s unfit to a life, to a man, to a role. These failed expectations are a chain heavier than the holy vows binding and strangling her.
Relations: Umberto Edgardo Mewes is her husband, but things are not working between them. A few years back, nurse Maria Elena Soza saved her husband’s leg after a work accident. Teaser:
It's not easy being a woman as Mrs Jaria de Bachelet is: an educated anthropologist, an expert of human nature. She’s not the stereotypical chilean woman and mother, quiet and obedient. She proudly offers her daughter Michelle and example of emancipation and freedom to follow, but as she found herself with an absent husband, alone and with no help, she felt lost and powerless, as any woman dealing with a rebellious child would. As fear prickles her most sensible strings, it also quickly turns love into grudge, lies into half truths, damnation into salvation.
Relations:
Michelle Bachelet is her daughter. Since she enrolled into university she’s changed and Angela fears for her. She’s been knowing Alba Pinera since many years and still remembers fondly all their chatting at Alba’s family mansion. Teaser:
The smell of fresh grass and the stink of fear, the fiery passion and the cold terror, friendly hands caressing the skin and harsh ones violating the body. The prayers and the screams, the blind anger and the resigned desperation. Cold, tears, blood, sweat and insanity. Poetry is a catharsis for Carmen, an excruciating thought from a past long gone. Today there is death and a mournful silence, and the pen that once danced at the tune of democracy and freedom, is forever broken.
Relations:
At her book presentation she met Professor Gustavo Ruiz who asked her to sign his copy; he was enthusiast of her work.
Marcia Scantlebury is a dear friend who always encouraged her to give a soul to her thoughts and poetry. She fondly remembers a childhood friend Rosa Humilde Ramos a kind and gentle girl; now that girl stands beyond an abyss.

Sometimes life asks for a fight, until the last breath. Marcia began her struggle at Punto Final, the newspaper she worked for, where her bravery only met fear, indifference and convenience. Her ideals broke against a stronger wall that only bombs will destroy where her pen failed. Sometimes life asks to marry a rifle, cradle a knife between the breasts, plan an attack with other MIR comrades. What life also ask is to drown sorrow when these brothers and sister in arms die. Life asks to never surrender, even when the pain for such losses is not the only wight one carries.
Relations:
She left Punto Final because Manuel Cabieses Donoso never liked her provocative articles and dind’t want to publish anything against the Government. Lately, she often turns to Doctor Alejandro Romero as the fight is taking its toll on her and she needs medical attentions. Ramira Luz has come a long way in life: from a young recruit coming from the countryside, to the Army, to being a Lieutenant in the DINA. Still, she can’t forget the hunger, the shack where her family lived, all those little ones, brothers and sisters, how they hugged each other to get some warmth during the harsh winters. It doesn’t matter what she had to throw away or to do, on her way to Santiago with a bunch of rags. She never turned back to her old life, and ever will, fearing having to face the monsters silently haunting and following her shadow. So she looks ahead, hopeful to get away, determined, stepping towards new horizons.
Relations:
Buenaventura is a childhood friend, but they took different paths in life, and it’s easy to see who made the better choice. Now, Maria Isabella is shaken every time she sees her. She fondly remember Blanca Alfonsin as for a while she worked in her household and they were good friends. There is a strong rivalry with Lieutenant Gonzalo Santelices Cuevas: they are both from the Army, but he doesn’t like a woman having authority over him, since Ramira started working for the DINA.

Teaser:
Blanca cradles her rifle as a child would with her favorite doll singing a rebellious lullaby. Her eyes are fierce, her smile is the unbreakable one of youth as she runs to a smoky basement, where she and her comrades print flyers speaking of revolution, armed fight and freedom. On a bright summer day, Blanca left her toys and her father’s mansion without looking back, her head held high, marching off to a red horizon. Red as her flag, red as the blood she would drown her innocence into. Is this the rightful price to pay for? If it is, then, let there be blood.
Relations:
She despises her father Jorge Alfonsin for working alongside the Junta. When she still lived with him, before joining the MIR, she met at a formal dinner Nelida Gutierrez Rivera a social climber who betrayed her people. She shares her fortune with the poors, those in need, organizing fundraising dinners, financing charity events, blaming her friends’ indifference and being the patroness of a soup kitchen run by the nuns. For many of her powerful friends charity is only one of her eccentric entertainments, one less interesting that her being able to speak with the dead. A woman of rare Christian morality, she smiles listening when she’s complimented on her good heart, and gracefully complies, when asked to show her talent.
Relations:
She once asked Josè Lopez Olivares to run a clinic for the less fortunate, but he laughed at her, telling her that if he’d wanted to be in charity business, then he’d be a priest.
