From a very humble family, she was brought up between oratories and pastorals, and managed to enter the world of the Gifted solely through her sweetness, good character and talent. For a long time, before arriving at Devington, she conducted distinguished choirs in all parts of Great Britain - especially religious, Gregorian and medieval choirs - with moderate success. Until, at a concert, she was noticed by Dean Conway, then a simple teacher, who used his influence in the university to get her hired. It was a revelatory moment.
Her background and history led Holland to believe that music had a saving power. There is nothing that gets to the core of feelings like a note, a harmony. If outside her lessons she comes across as gentle, meek and a little insecure, she changes radically when it is time to conduct the choir. She takes great care of her students - especially those who have difficulty expressing themselves - and what better medium than music? Besides, as she always repeats: you can't go wrong if you put your heart into it.
