Rick lived in Winterfell when it was still ruled by the Starks: he had the luck of fencing with Robb, sometimes, and also with Jon Snow.
When the downfall for the Northern wolves came, the young man became homeless, and Castle Black felt like a good place to make himself useful.
Thus his watch began, during the Black Brothers' darkest times.
Rick is a good-natured and accommodating person, who has earned the trust of many, and with good reason: he has established a steady friendship with August Glover, now leader of the expedition, and he has every intention to prove himself and to show himself trustworthy, ready to give himself up so as not to disappoint those who rely on him.

Relations:

His kind and friendly nature helped Rick to make friends with most of his companions. First of all August Glover  , the leader of the mission, which now considers him his right-hand man and has the respect of the young lad.
He believes that Ser Finnegan  's attitude is a very dangerous one, in such a risky situation, and he does everything to prevent any escalation. He knows he can count on Darren   and Alliser  , trusted and steady men.
He’s interested in Dorrick   and in his knowledge: many don’t appreciate the usefulness of an educated person, but Rick certainly does.
Ser Osney Kettleblack   is nice and they often chatted; moreover, he clearly needs a good friend and Rick doesn’t mind watching his back.
