Emily Howton
#53 - Professor of Rhetoric

Played by : M. T.

Club or Secret Society: Les lumières
Faculty: Professors

Teaser:

Young, bright, tenacious. With serious doubts tugging at their conscience.
They care more about their students than the school rules, which they often find stupid and ridiculous, perhaps because they did not study at Devington, but at a Public University, which they attended on a scholarship. Of course, at the university where they studied there were no such strange - and very often divisive - traditions. There should be no such differences among students: teachers should be impartial, not coddling those with the most prestigious or richest families.
Despite everything, they keep working at Devington. They tell themself that it is because they wants to change things from the inside, but inside they know that no other university in England would match the prestige and pay of this job. This ambivalence is like dripping water that, day after day, hollows the principles in their heart. It is a raw and painful nerve.
The character has been married for three years to someone they love very much and with whom they have recently started trying for a child. The decision they have made is very scary. As much as they think that the division between Donors and Gifted is just, they do not know if they could bear to see their child sacrificed for the nation. When they think about these doubts, these questions they cannot answer, they feel caged in falsehood, without the strength to get out of it.

Les lumières

They are a secret society inspired by the myth of the cave, Plato, the Enlightenment, the Socratic method. Centred on the cult of reason, on investigation, on science, they subject themselves to tests and interrogations to get to knowledge, and to know themselves. They move in the darkness to come to see the light, and support themselves as a family in the process. They never lie. Lies and deception are not contemplated, to arrive at the Truth. They oppose all forms of mystification and, if they can, expose lies and deceptions.

Relations:

You are in open conflict with Sullivan  , whom you see as the embodiment of the world of ridiculous accumulated privilege, a world which needs to be overthrown. You are never disrespectful, but you lose no opportunity to emphasise your point of view.
You respect R. Mace   for their ideas of equality and justice.
You urge P. Campbell   to overcome their cynicism and find some hope.
You appreciate the personal and modern relationship D. Jennings   has with students.
