If one has to die, better to face it with with a full belly, even if this means taking the Black. And if one can read, one can wear the Black even among the dustiest books, because even the Night’s Watch have Maesters, and Maesters need assistants. Dorrick’s plan seemed without risks, and indeed had worked as it should, granting him a simple and interesting life within the walls of Castle Black. But even the best plan may fail, because often it is in the wildest and most dangerous places that the skills of healers and the knowledge of scholars are most needed. Dorrick keeps repeating himself that he can survive, despite the fear and the lack of respect in his comrades’ eyes… but truly believing he can make it is entirely a different matter.

Relations:

Dorrick is not a warrior, but he entrusts the swords of his comrades to protect him. For instance those of August Glover  , who’s the leader of the expedition, of Ser Finnegan   who’s a Ranger of great experience, or of Darreth Orme  , who has been in the North for much less time, but is a formidable warrior with a noble spirit; and of course that of Ser Osmund  , a Steward like you, but unlike you a Knight. Dorrick really wants to be helpful and earn their respect and esteem. But even Val  , the woman of the Wildlings who guides them, would certainly fight better than him: Dorrick isn’t ashamed of being weaker than a woman – she is the Wildling Princess, while he’s not a warrior, but a Steward who spent all his life among books. He would like to talk more to her to better understand her people, the Free Folk. Sandor Rivers   had a really interesting life and they talked about it a lot when he came to Castle Black; Dorrick regards him as a good friend and he is happy of having him along in this frightening adventure. Rick Snow   has also been friendly since their departure, who knows why.
